The Future and Little Flock of Horrrors Merino Wool

The Future and Little Flock of Horrrors Merino Wool

Most merino brands won't talk about their yarn. We will — because the difference is bigger than you'd think.

We want to tell you something about how we make our merino — because most brands won't talk about this.

We use Sudwolle double yarn in all our 200gsm merino. Sudwolle is one of the most respected yarn producers in the world, based in Germany. High-end fashion houses use them. Performance outdoor brands use them. We use them because the quality is simply better.

What is 18.5 micron — and why does it matter?

Our yarn is 18.5 micron — superfine, soft against bare skin, and non-itchy from the very first wear. The micron count refers to the diameter of each individual wool fibre. The lower the number, the finer the fibre, and the softer it feels against skin.

Most cheaper merino uses 20 micron and above. That's the difference between a garment you reach for every day and one you tolerate. Under 19 micron is considered superfine — the benchmark for premium knitwear that genuinely feels good to wear all day.

Single ply vs double ply — the difference most brands hide

Most merino clothing is made with single ply yarn — one strand of fibre twisted together. It's cheaper, faster to produce, and it shows over time. The fibres sit exposed on the surface, pilling faster, losing shape sooner, and wearing out quicker.

We use double ply yarn. Two strands twisted together. The fibres lock against each other, the yarn is significantly stronger, and it resists pilling far better. It's why a Little Flock of Horrors piece looks the same in year three as it does on day one.

Our labdip swatches — the yarn before the garment

Before a single garment is made, we approve labdip swatches — physical yarn samples that confirm the colour, weight, and feel of every fabric we use. These are the actual swatches from our current range.
